John McAfee: The Real Story Behind the Antivirus Pioneer

John McAfee was a British‑American programmer and entrepreneur best known for creating one of the first widely used commercial antivirus programs. In 1987, he founded McAfee Associates to develop and sell his software, which helped combat the growing threat of computer viruses in the early personal computing era. His creation played a significant role in shaping the cybersecurity industry.

McAfee stepped away from the company in 1994 and eventually sold his remaining stake. The antivirus business continued to grow and later became part of larger technology firms, but McAfee himself had no operational involvement in the company for many years.

After leaving the company, he pursued a variety of business ventures. He was involved with several smaller tech startups and explored interests in areas such as messaging apps, cybersecurity projects, and emerging technologies including cryptocurrency. His public persona became increasingly unconventional over time.

McAfee also ran for president of the United States as a libertarian candidate twice, seeking the Libertarian Party nomination in 2016 and 2020. Though he did not succeed, these campaigns reflected his longstanding libertarian beliefs, including strong criticism of government surveillance and advocacy for personal freedom.

In the later years of his life, McAfee faced serious legal trouble. In October 2020, he was arrested in Spain on U.S. tax‑evasion charges. U.S. federal prosecutors alleged that he failed to file tax returns for several years despite earning income from sources such as consulting, cryptocurrency promotions, speaking engagements, and selling rights to his life story.

While awaiting extradition to the United States in a Spanish prison near Barcelona, McAfee was found dead on June 23, 2021. Spanish authorities stated that “everything indicates” he died by suicide, and official judicial sources confirmed the cause as hanging. His death came just hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to face the U.S. tax charges.

McAfee’s life was marked by innovation, unpredictability, and controversy. He helped ignite a multi‑billion‑dollar cybersecurity industry, but his later years were overshadowed by legal battles and public statements that fueled speculation and intense media attention. Regardless of public perception, the impact of his early work on antivirus software is a major part of the technology world’s history.
